Industrial Ethernet Solutions
Industrial Ethernet systems require a high degree-of-determinism and reliability. In many factory automation applications, Ethernet has replaced legacy serial "field bus" connections due to its higher bandwidth and ability to link with enterprise networks. However, Ethernet did not inherently have the deterministic response of field bus systems. To overcome this limitation, the major industrial Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) defined their own Ethernet protocols. These Ethernet protocols have since become widely-deployed open standards: PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, ModbusTCP, and several others. Some of these protocols are fully compatible with standard TCP/IP Ethernet networks, while others have modified the data link, network, and/or transport layers (layers 2-4 in the OSI model) to achieve deterministic performance. Although these protocols can coexist with standard Ethernet, they are not interoperable with each other in a deterministic way.

Analog Devices fido1100® Real-Time Communications Controllers feature a unique architecture designed to meet the latency, jitter and high-reliability demands of embedded industrial applications. These 32-Bit microcontrollers offer deterministic processing, precise context switching, and predictable interrupt latency for real-time tasks. Exceptional deterministic processing is achieved by embedding the low-level capabilities of a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) in the device. The deterministic processing enables the controllers to run at a clock rate of only 66MHz and reduce power dissipation in the system. Programmable peripherals support communication protocols across multiple platforms. The four integrated universal I/O controllers allow the devices to implement any communication protocol.
